I wasn't going to let Irene blow the fig off the tree, so we brought in bushels.

August brought one of our semi-annual treks to the wilds of Wisconsin to visit my parental units. Highlights were the zoo, swimming and a small County fair, which featured a corn box, as in a giant sandbox, but with corn kernels, in which the kids could play. Corn is very dusty. Their favorite - the hotel pool where we stayed on the trip. Yes this is a theme. We said goodbye to Mother Barbara who has been the interim rector at our church and my boss for the last year. But we will see her again- she’s only in PA, and not too far from Dutch Wonderland. And I turned (hum, hum) years old. We had a visit from Hurricane/tropical storm Irene, and dodged the bullet this time. We only got 4 feet of tidal flooding, vs. the 10 that had been predicted if it hadn’t slowed down by running into New Jersey. Thanks New Jersey. Still lots of local road flooding and we went up to Chris’s house for the night. We only had power out for few hours, but friends were in the dark for well over a week. Just in case, I had cooked up most of the stuff in the freezer on the theory that it’s easier to keep cooked food, than watch raw food you can’t cook spoil. Chicken ala orange, fig cobbler, brisket... it was a tasty week.

Mother's Day

Last spring while riding the train home from the city where I had just handed in the last of Lian's paperwork, I had nothing to do since I had gone through all my reading material while waiting at the Chinese Embassy. I got out a notepad and this poem started to flow and practically wrote itself. Adoption can be bittersweet as there is no gain without a loss.
